As one of the Doctors of the Church, you’ve most likely heard of John of the Cross, or read some of his work.
A well known Spanish mystic, Carmelite priest, and poet in the 1500’s, St. John is best known for his extensive writing on spiritual journeys and transformation. His work includes many themes of suffering, contemplation, Dark Nights, and divine love experienced with God.
While I’m by no means an expert on his background, much of his writing deeply resonates with shared views of faith, and he is a figure I’m eager to learn more about. The Collected Works of St. John of the Cross spans almost *800 pages* or you can find individual copies of his work.
Until further reading (and eventually more blog posts exploring his work!) here are some of the most beautiful and thought-provoking quotes I’ve come across, written by St. John of the Cross.
